View Full Version : So I got myself a new car w/SR ran into problems...

*I am an SR noobie. Please be easy on me :x
...on the way home back from torrance. It's kinda late so I figure I'd ask here before I give Jin (sp?) from US. Earth (where i bought the car) a call...
So I picked up a zenki S14 w/ redtop sr today. I was excited then started boosting home. It was fine on the test drive and everything...
So when I was driving home in traffic, I decided to not boost to conserve some gas. I was driving w/o boost for almost an hour.
As soon as the traffic let up, i opened up the throttle, then the car started to sputter once it hit boost, wouldnt rev past 3k in gear, couldn't drive past 60 mph most of the way home, had a low idle/ died at neutral sometimes and from what i can tell (from the cheap autometer narrowband a/f gauge) i was running rich the whole time....also used a full tank of gas to drive home 100 miles :hammer:
I made it home and unplugged the battery.
So heres my question(s).
The owner I bought it from tuned the car with greddy emanage ultimate.. said he adjusted the amount of fuel going into the motor cuz it was running lean. The car also sat without a battery for an unknown length of time ( the tags on the car still say july 2007). So is it possible, the tune he did got erased and he forgot about it? The car definately ran fine while I was still in torrance.. Once I got 10-20 miles away was when the car started having issues.
So what exactly went wrong? My dad thinks the engine was being flooded with fuel...
Here's the mods I know that's on the car..
-Redtop SR20DET w/ 40k miles
-S15 T28 Turbo
-Greddy Emanange ultimate
-Greddy FMIC
-Greddy BOV (open not recirculated)
-Koyo Radiator
-14" electric fan
-Cone filter
- HKS exhaust
-3" downpipe
-3" test pipe.
Please help me out or refer me to someone who has experience tuning Greddy emanage. I prefer someone in San Diego, but if the shop has enough space elsewhere (like somewhere with you kids in 626), I'll tow the car.
Also, is it possible to run with this setup without the piggy back ecu?
I'd rather just remove it if that's all it takes....
I'm gonna give the seller a call tomorrow to see what's up, but I want your guy's insight so I can ask the right questions. The dude who sold me the car is pretty legit (worked on taka aono and hiro sumida's cars and also competed in top drift 07')

i'm gonna go ahead and say that it's ur MAF sensor plug.
it probably fell off in traffic. car runs like shit and sputters at 3-4k when it falls off. plug it back in!
US earth wudnt screw u over. they're hella legit.

Soooo... this morning I checked the vacuum lines and ic couplings as suggested by jeremy, and the maf sensor as suggested by chuck, but i found out the only thing that was loose was the POSITIVE BATTERY terminal..
BHAHAHAHAH! I couldnt stop laughing... oh well..
Car idles fine, boost is kicking in, etc. I'll test drive it as soon as the rain stops out here....
The motor is still running really rich though.. i smell like gas...

that's kinda weird ... the battery probably wasn't the problem to your sputtering problem...
because once the car is on, hypothetically you can completely unplug the battery becasue the alternator will keep the car running...
but maybe....gah i dunno i just woke up.

the battery would not have anything to do with it !!! I agree about the MAF sensor and or the plug !!! ANd if it has an SR ECU which it should you don't need the Greddy E manage for the car to run !!! it should run fine with the stk ECU !! Brian arent you in ESCO ??? I can come bye an take a look if you want ???

even if the battery terminal was loose? it felt better today after unplugging the car overnight :hammer:. haha forgive me, i'm so motor retarded. I understand tire sizes, wheel fitment, differential installs, suspension shit, etc, but i dont understand how to identify problems on a motor.. i'm completely clueless, hahaha. the single slammer had me worry free for the past 4 years and i mainly concentrated on other stuff about my car....
i sent you my number. i'm free this weekend/next week. if you solve my low idle and rich motor, i'll buy you a COSTCO pizza, chicken bake, and a berry smoothie! hahahahahahah.
i discovered today the motor isnt fully stock (i guess jin (sp?) meant it was stock internally.. aha). i talked to gary on aim and we found out the fuel injectors were aftermarket and were red.... checked the MAF and he told me it's stock.
i looked around on some popular sr20 part stores and looked at anything that had red injectors and it seemed all of em were 740cc.... (i didnt think u needed aftermarket injectors on a t28 at stock boost.. correct me if i'm wrong...)
as for the test drive... the car felt a lot better. i was hitting 10 psi and boosting unlike yesterday minus some bogging at some points once i got on the throttle. i'd is fine at start up and the first couple miles and then once i got out of the freeway and made a stop (in neutral) at the stoplight, the car idle dropped and the motor turned off (i usually pop the gear into neutral as i slow down, but i've been avoiding that so my motor doesnt die at lights). After that I had to keep revving the motor (lightly back up to 1-1.5k) so it wouldnt die when I stopped at stoplights.. It didnt help that it had a test pipe and there's a lot of cops on my way home.. hahah.

the idle stumbling down to kill ur car could be simply because u have a non-recirculating BOV, which will make ur car run rich for that moment...
let us know of updates!

check your gas, make sure your using high octane, pop in a octane booster with a full tank of 91 and see if that helps. if you car has a emanage with a t28 im sure its a almost 300whp car, he might have turned down the boost, but your e-manage might be tuned for higher boost. You should check for that. Not re-circulating the bov should cause that problem, Ive been running a HKS SSQ since my SR was stock boost never had my car idel funny. But once Ive used Shell for some reason my car started doing the idle and shut off problem on that one tank of gas. So I poped in a NOS OB and it helped. Turn up your idle screw and see if that helps also. Good Luck!

i didnt tell you on the phone earlier, but i was planning too..
unfortunately when i was taking apart the interior.. i decided to play with the locks... and then i accidentally locked my keys in the car while my dad had the spare while he was at work, hahahahaha.
i'll stop by for sure after i get the parts and remove the emanage.

Update:
Josh came by this afternoon and noticed a couple things that I had no idea about..
-there was a hole in one of the couplings on the cold pipe
-there is a nismo fuel regulator installed.
I'm going to take a look at the fuel pump tomorrow as suggested by josh...
the red top injectors are possibly 370cc and another friend told me there are some red 370cc remanufactured fuel injectors around.
*phew* i feel like i'm getting closer to having a sound track car :).

New update:
I got a set of injectors courtesy of Ed from Drift Tech in Vista, CA (THANKS!).
I installed those today and josh came over again to take a look at the car and drive it. We are gonna try swapping out the wastegate since the boost is spiking to 20psi :hammer: even with a HBC manual boost controller on there. Also gonna remove that.
Before I wire up the gauges to the sensors, I have to wait for FRsport to ship me my greddy oil filter relocation kit T_T. oh poo.
Here's my gauge setup for now....

OH JOY!
Other than that good stuff... the motor is running fine.. no more weird idles.
More updates to come soon! :)

As of today, my car is running like a champ :).
3 big things were removed and/or replaced.
-Removed greddy emanage ultimate (for sale if someone is interested)
-Installed stock 370cc injectors and removed unknown redtop injectors
-Swapped wastegate actuators with Josh's spare.
ALL GOOD BABY! :lolcry:
Time for suspension and swapping diffs between my cars (i'm also considering just welding the s14 diff). Woot! Watch out July event!

Hehe. Once you snap a tie rod at the track and had to drive home 3 hours from WSIR with no alignment and new tie rods, you kinda get over the small twitch that my s14 has, XD. :hammer:
